Your speech matters! Not that it is the determining factor of who you are, but it is the true expression of the condition of your heart. For the mouth merely brings out inward inclinations. By suggesting that your speech matters, I am also emphatically suggesting you examine your heart.
The Scriptures compare the tongue (the vehicle of speech) to a tree. Proverbs 15:4, ‘A gentle tongue is a tree of life’. Some of the trees bear precious fruits, and it is a lovely sight to behold them loaded with them in their seasons. No wonder Proverbs 25:11 says, ‘A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver’. Such a tongue is a tree of life. Sadly, others of these trees bear evil fruit, grapes of Sodom, and clusters of Gomorrah; their words are venom of asps under their lips (Romans 3:13).
Hence, watch your speech. May the fruit (words) of your tongue be a sweet fragrance for all! Yet, you must know that it is only grace that can season the heart, then only the tongue can be a tree of life (Colossians 4:6).
