BE CAREFUL OF PROFANE OATHS

Giving oaths or promises about what you plan to do has become part of normal speech, and common endeavor amongst all men. Oaths have in a greater degree become the emphasis and assurance part of the conversation. And the habit of swearing is so strengthened in some, that they have lost all sense and conscious that mere oath is a sin.

Reasons to consider the seriousness of this:

1. Profane oaths are an high abuse of the dreadful and sacred name of God, which neither be spoken nor thought of without the deepest awe and reverence. It is the taking of that sacred name in vain. (Exodus 20:7)

2. Swearing is a part of the worship of God; and therefore profane swearing can be less than the profanation of his worship and robbing him of all the glory he has thereby. (Deuteronomy 6:13; Jeremiah 4:2)

3. It is a sin which God has severely threatened to punish. (Hosea 4:2-3)

4. It brings soul-judgments and spiritual plagues upon your soul. (James 5:12)

5. A custom of vain words and profane oaths is as plain an indication and discovery of an unregenerate soul as any in the world. (Ecclesiastes 9:2; Isaiah 32:6; Luke 6:45)

We must take serious thoughts about our words, and speech is not separated from our worship. Profane oaths are the corrupt fruit of a graceless heart. ‘For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned’ Matthew 12:37
